Family Equality Announces Appointment of Denise Brogan-Kator in Interim CEO Role; Next Step in Executive Search Process

The Family Equality Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Denise Brogan-Kator as Chief Executive Officer (Interim). As the executive search process proceeds, the Executive Committee of the Board recognized the need for experienced and uninterrupted leadership for Family Equality as the organization’s permanent CEO is selected, and the Board is delighted that Brogan-Kator is willing to step into this role.

Denise Brogan-Kator joined Family Equality’s policy team in 2012, and was promoted to Chief Policy Officer in July 2017. Brogan-Kator is highly qualified for this new role. She has been active in the campaign for lived and legal equality for the LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit community for over 25 years, serving as executive director of Equality Michigan and as the managing attorney at a Michigan law firm which she owned with her wife, Mary. A veteran of the U.S. Submarine Service, Brogan-Kator graduated from the University of Michigan Law school, matriculating as the first openly transgender law student and later returning as the first openly transgender law professor, and has also earned her MBA from the University of Colorado.

Family Equality Board Chair Erica Horton said in a statement:

“We are pleased that Denise has agreed to step up in response to the Board’s invitation to provide leadership for Family Equality through the executive search process for our new, permanent CEO. We are all grateful that Family Equality will be able to benefit from her storied leadership during this time of transition.”

The Family Equality Board of Directors has appointed an Executive Search Committee, and is pleased to announce that the organization will work with Koya Leadership Partners to conduct the search process for the next CEO. A prospectus and guidance for interested candidates will be announced here in the coming weeks.
